How will our youth today be effective by Internet addiction? Revision to Youth and effect* and Internet and (addiction), Addiction* and youth and (Internet)
MINDING THE NET
Your suggestion: Revised
(youth OR adolescents OR teenagers) AND Internet AND addiction
Citation for Popular magazine
Goldman, Lea. "This Is Your Brain on Clicks"
Forbes
I chose this article because I was familiar with the popular magazines, and it focused on Internet addiction with youth and also what they are doing to solve this disorder. Another thing that I liked about this article is that it focuses on another country this makes this topic a more global problem. This article also gives percentages of addicted youth, which is possibly back by documented sources.
Citation for Scholarly Journal
Fioravanti, Giulia ,Dèttore, Davide, Casale, Silvia."Adolescent Internet Addiction: Testing the Association Between Self-Esteem, the Perception of Internet Attributes, and Preference for Online Social Interactions".CyberPsychology, Behavior & Social Networking; Jun2012, Vol. 15 Issue 6, p318-323, 6p. Academic Search Premier. Tues. 24 July 2012.
Give a brief discussion noting three things that identify this as a research article.
I used the the EBSCOhost for Academic search, this article was also labeled Academic Journal on the side, and had a in dept heading. I also marked the primary source option too. This article explains a case study on social behaviors and Internet addictions, and this possibly could be useful research for my topic.
Citation for an article from a newspaper
MICHAEL JANOFSKY. "Youth Pleads An Addiction To the Internet In Threat Case". New York Times. 13 January 2000.Academic Search Premier. Tues. 24 July. 2012.
This article from the New York Times, would be good for a research towards my topic because it takes a actual case of a youth that is blaming the Internet for a addiction he might have that has caused him to make threats via email chats. Even though this is a court proceeding, and the defendant is probably only looking to put blame other than himself, I still think this would be a good opinion start.
Summarizing this activity
During this assignment I kind of stumbled a few times, not sure if I was doing it right or not. I didn't really have to change my search statement to much but what I noticed that when I used your suggestion I came up with better articles, they seem to hit the main point, with a lot of different direction. My citations seem a little long especially for the Scholarly Journal.
Hi, Cynthia:
ReplyDeleteYou appear to have found relevant and useful articles. As I mentioned, age can be hard to describe and capture in your search statement, so using synonyms can be helpful.
Your scholarly article is a case study, which is a good indication of original research. If they mention data or a methodology in the abstract, that is a great clue. Your citations include all the elements necessary for the reader to track back to your articles. Your scholarly article was pretty recent but your other articles seemed a bit old, yet it seems like a current problem. You may have chosen the most interesting but with newspapers, you would usually select more recent articles since current events is their strength.
Thank you for your efforts,
Andrea
