Final Exam essay

Deep Web Search: Distad, M. (2011). The Future of Print: The Book. Feliciter, 57(5), 182-184
With the future of print I used Clark College EBSCOhost I typed in his last name made sure full text was checked, and I also checked article in the document type, and the PDF full text again. This article was the first to show up.

Open Web Search: Morrison, E. (2011, August 22). Are books dead, and can authors survive? The Guardian.
With this article I used a google advance search typing in the authors name, and the name of the article. Which to my amazement it was the first site.

Evaluate the articles using ASPECT:

The Future of Print: The Book

Authority: What I found out about Merrill Distad is that he is an Associate University Liberian at the University of Alberta, he is also the co-editor of Peel's Bibliography of Canadian Prairies, and the author of The University of Alberta Library: The First Hundred Years.
Sources: With in this article I found no sources, so this makes me feel that this article is in his opinion.
Purpose: Even with lacking the sources he does make a good point with paper vs e-books, and how paper books are dwindling away and becoming obsolete. So I feel that there is a purpose to this article.
Evenness: The article seemed to have a evenness to it, but after reviewing IRIS there is probably a little bias, since I feel that he is leaning more towards the paper books.
Coverage: I feel the article shows good coverage, and the title is in no way misleading from the article.
Timeliness: The article is dated 2011 making it a current enough, that you could use it.

Since there is no other sources, and it is a little bias it's not the best in credibility, but I feel this would be great for a argumentative paper; since I feel it is common knowledge that books are becoming obsolete.

Are books dead, and can authors survive?

Authority: Ewan Morrison has published four novels, and written a collection of short stories.
Sources: There were no sources in this article, but however he did have links that allowed you to see where he has quoting from.
Purpose: The articles purpose seemed to be on how and if the writers are going to able to make a living in the digital age. He gives some great examples of "the financial downturn in the digital industries"(Morrison). Like home videos, music, newspapers, photography, and even the porn industry. Another thing he mentions is piracy, and why would you pay when you can get it for free.
Evenness: I believe Morrison touched down on a lot in this article, and gave clear examples, it flowed well.
Coverage: I feel the article showed good coverage on the topic he was writing about.
Timeliness: This article was published in 2011, due to the date I believe it could be current enough.

For it's credibility I think I would actually used it for research, Morrison makes some good points, and is very informative. Morrison also added links within his article, that can lead you to other sites, which this can be very helpful. I also like the paper he his writing for (The Guardian) which in the past I've found some great articles that have been reliable.

Even though both articles had good points, and both were convincing as a reader I feel Ewan Morrison's article, "Are books dead, and can authors survive?" to be more intriguing. This article made me realize how the web and other electronic devises have impacted the future of paper books. Even bookstores like Barnes and Noble are selling Kindles right at the front door, this makes me wonder how much of a impact of these devises have on their company, and why would a bookstore even sell something that would limit their book sells.

Morrison's article goes over some very important points, that really does makes sense. For starters writers get advances from publishers this allows them to live, once a book is published they receive royalties, this system keeps them going. When everything becomes digital the advances get cut out of the picture, making the only income coming in from that of future sales.

These days consumers are looking for is convenience at a low cost, and they have found it on the web. Sites like Amazon sell their books at a considerable large discount which have driven bookstores to close shop. What really shocked me was that "Amazon can sell millions of books by obscure authors, while at the same time those authors, when they get their Amazon receipts, will see that they have sold only five books in a year"(Morrison). Wow! Digital industries have impacted a lot of different industries such as home videos, music, newspapers, photography, and porn all of these have been impacted financially. Most are able to be viewed free or can be pirated off a torrent site. Google has even stated that they plan on scanning 130m books, and have plans on making it available free, and paying the authors off a minimal price per book.

I really feel the digital world will win over the paper, consumers are going to look for where they can get more for less. Unfortunately I feel our society will miss out on some great authors along the way, and it's a really depressing thought because writing is an art form.

Research Journal, Part 9: Finding Information on the Open Web

WEB 1 (.com)
Search Engine: Google Advance
Search Strategy: youth OR adolescents AND Internet AND addiction.com

Citation: Smahel.David, and Subrahmanyam.Kaveri, "Digital Youth" Springer Science+Business Media, New York, NY 2011
http://www.springer.com

Summary:

This seems to follow all ASPECT, being very credible information. This is a E-book and a full text is available on the web for viewing.  This E-book offers a full descriptions of authors including email address, and it also provided a in depth review of the book. There is also cited information, and references. This book "focuses on the psychological effects of today's online media". This seems to be right on with my topic, they also focuses on other topics involving youth and the Internet that could be tied in with with my topic. The Springer site seems to also offer a lot of info on other subjects online which you are able to access Abstract, Full Text, or PDF.

WEB 2 (.gov)
Search Engine: Google Advance
Search Strategy: (youth or adolescents) AND Internet AND addiction site:.gov

Citation: Shek. Daniel, and Yu. Lu, "Internet Addiction Phenomenon in Early Adolescents in Hong Kong" ScientificWorldJournal. 2012 June 18. Date Accessed, July  30th,2012.  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3385635/

Summary:
This Source I feel is credible it is a up to date journal on the government website. The article gives information on the author, it cites pages from references with links. The article also gives clear statistics on the study, plus results of the study. The article offers Abstract, and PDF formats. I feel this article could be useful with my topic since it is a study, and results are made clear.

WEB 3 (edu.)
Search Engine: Google Advance
Search Strategy: (youth or adolescents) AND Internet AND addiction

Citation: Griffiths. Mark D, and Kuss. Daria J. "Excessive online social networking: Can adolescents become addicted to facebook?" Vol.29 No. 4, 2011. Date Accessed, July 30th,2012.
http://nottinghamtrent.academia.edu/MarkGriffiths/Papers/928007/Kuss_D.J._and_Griffiths_M.D._2011_._Excessive_online_social_networking_Can_adolescents_become_addicted_to_Facebook_Education_

Summary:
This site seems to be credible, due to the fact it gives information on both authors and it is linked to SHEU that states it is nationally-recognised, since 1977. This site is part of the education and health journal. The references used for this article a within the last two years, and feel could be work able with my topic. Both authors are possibly well knowledgeable within the subject with one being a doctoral researcher in the field of online addictions and the other a professor of gambling studies. Since this site is located on a edu web page I see a credibility link there.

WEB 4 (.org)
Search Engine: Google Advance
Search Strategy: youth or adolescents AND Internet AND addiction

Citation: Yuan K, Qin W, Wang G, Zeng F, Zhao L, et al. (2011) Microstructure Abnormalities in Adolescents with Internet Addiction Disorder. PLoS ONE 6(6):e20708. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0020708 Date Accessed July 30th, 2012.
http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0020708

Summary:
This site seems credible enough, the article is only a year old with a lot of info, and references. One thing about this article it might be a little harder to read since there are a lot of scientific data that is being explained. As like above authors are documented and emails are provided. This site the article is on is a peer-reviewed, open access journal.

Summary of Journal 9:

When searching for my topic on these four domains I found that at least the .com, edu, and .gov had some of the same articles. One thing that I noticed on the .com and .org was that there was a lot of advertising for rehabs. When I clicked on a site that looked like it would of been a very credible article just by the heading what I initially found was that the site was misleading to a smaller less credible site with a more of a help line or brief descriptions of my topic. The .com domain and the .org seemed to be the hardest to find credible sites and were the two that I spent most of my time browsing through especially .com. When I started my search with .gov, and .edu I found that I had more options for credible sources, and less misleading sites. I feel that .edu and .gov would be the best domains for my topic.

Research Journal, Part 8: Types of Information: Focus on Search Engines and Web Sites

Search Tools:
Exalead

This search engine offers a advance search option where you can exclude terms, do a proximity search, exact words, and exact phrases. One thing I liked about this search engine was that it was pretty simple to use, and also it lets you add on for example:+Internet +Addiction (Youth)  OPT adults. There is also the option of where you want to find it; like site search, title search, URL search, and Link search, and gives you the option of time period.

What are you looking for?

  • Exact Phrases e.g. "to be or not to be"
  • Exact Words e.g. +the godfather
  • Optional Terms e.g. cow OPT mad
  • Exclude Terms e.g. star -movie
  • Proximity Search e.g. movie NEXT star
  • Logic e.g. (movie AND star) OR (famous AND people)
  • Phonetic Search e.g. soundslike:shakespear
  • Approximate spelling Search e.g. spellslike:exlaead
  •  e.g. movie star language:en

Where do you want to find it?

In which period of time are you interested?

There seems to be a lot of options available in this search engine, it is something I might use in the future due to it's friendly user function.

Metasearch Tools:
Dogpile. All the best search engines piled into one

With this search engine it didn't seem like they offered that much of options, it had a advance search option that only offered:

  • All of these words
  • the exact phrase
  • Any of these words
  • none of these words
  • Include domain or exclude domain

Web Search Results for "Internet "Internet addiction" youth…

This engine did find sources for what I was looking for, but the search could of been narrowed better.
I really don't think I would use this search engine in the future even though it is very simple to use I would rather have more options.

Subject Directories:

INFOMINE logo

After looking through the subject directories I found that Infomine looked the most promising, to me it seemed similar to Boolean. Infomine offered Advance search such as search in these fields, search in these subject categories, limit search to, display options, and browse options for all subject categories. Infomine also provided search tips which can be very helpful to breaking down the topic your searching for by giving examples on how to do this. There is also a browse resource type that can be useful. The only downfall  was it was a little confusing to me, maybe because it does gives you a lot of options which that is good but can be a little overwhelming at times.  There is a possibility I might use this site in the future, I've bookmarked it for future reference, and so I can play around with it more to get more acquainted with.

Research Journal, Part 7: Finding Articles in Periodical Indexes

  1. The successful search statement you used.  Include the actual format as well as any search modes you might have chosen.

How will our youth today be effective by Internet addiction? Revision to Youth and effect* and Internet and (addiction), Addiction* and youth and (Internet)

 MINDING THE NET
Webb, Dave. Today's Parent24. 11 (Nov 2007): 165-166,168.

 Your suggestion: Revised
(youth OR adolescents OR teenagers) AND Internet AND addiction

Citation for Popular magazine

Goldman, Lea. "This Is Your Brain on Clicks"
Forbes175. 10.May 9, 2005. ProQuest LLCJune 2010.

I chose this article because I was familiar with the popular magazines, and it focused on Internet addiction with youth and also what they are doing to solve this disorder. Another thing that I liked about this article is that it focuses on another country this makes this topic a more global problem. This article also gives percentages of addicted youth, which is possibly back by documented sources.

Citation for Scholarly Journal

Fioravanti, Giulia ,Dèttore, DavideCasale, Silvia."Adolescent Internet Addiction: Testing the Association Between Self-Esteem, the Perception of Internet Attributes, and Preference for Online Social Interactions".CyberPsychology, Behavior & Social Networking; Jun2012, Vol. 15 Issue 6, p318-323, 6p.  Academic Search Premier. Tues. 24 July 2012.

Give a brief discussion noting three things that identify this as a research article.

I used the the EBSCOhost for Academic search, this article was also labeled Academic Journal on the side, and had a in dept heading. I also marked the primary source option too. This article explains  a case study on social behaviors and Internet addictions, and this possibly could be useful research for my topic.

Citation for an article from a newspaper

MICHAEL JANOFSKY. "Youth Pleads An Addiction To the Internet In Threat Case". New York Times. 13 January 2000.Academic Search Premier. Tues. 24 July. 2012.

This article from the New York Times, would be good for a research towards my topic because it takes a actual case of a youth that is blaming the Internet for a addiction he might have that has caused him to make threats via email chats. Even though this is a court proceeding, and the defendant is probably only looking to put blame other than himself, I still think this would be a good opinion start.

Summarizing this activity

During this assignment I kind of stumbled a few times, not sure if I was doing it right or not. I didn't really have to change my search statement to much but what I noticed that when I used your suggestion I came up with better articles, they seem to hit the main point, with a lot of different direction. My citations seem a little long especially for the Scholarly Journal.

Research Journal, Part 6: Database Feature and Searching Techniques

Part 1: Practice Writing Boolean Search Statements
    1. What breeds of dogs make good therapy pets? Breed* and dogs and therapy pets: This one I changed to Dog Breed* and therapy pets, but even with this I only found two sources.
    2. Debate the pros and cons of fish farming: Fish and farming* (pro and cons): Writing it this way I came up with only one page, but changing it to Fish and farming* (pro or cons) I came up with multiple sources.
    3. How much of current scientific breakthroughs were influenced by science fiction? Scientific and science fiction and (influenced*)
    4. Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet? Vegetarian* and diet and health* and meat, this seemed the best way to input to find sources.
    5. Does anti-smoking advertising by the tobacco industry lead to increased smoking among youth? Smoking advertising* and industry and "increased youth smoking". I found nothing this way, but found multiple pages of sources changing it to Advertising and youth smoking.
Part 2: Boolean and your Own Topic

How will our youth today be effective by Internet addiction?

    • Youth and effect* and Internet and (addiction)
    • Internet and addiction and (youth)
    • Addiction* and youth and (Internet)
    • Youth and effect* and Internet and (addiction*)
All these searches came up with sources.

Research Journal, Part 5: Digging into Databases and Books

Research Journal, Part 5: Digging into Databases and Books

    Internet/Internet Addiction

    Cannell Library Book Catalog
    1.  Search Term(s) used: Internet/and Internet addiction
    2.  Citation information for one book: (author, title, city of publication, publisher, publication date): Roberts, Kevin J.   Cyber junkie : escape the gaming and Internet trap,  Center City, Minn. Hazelden, 2010
    3.  Subject Headings (taken from the Subject Field): Video game addiction, Internet addiction
    4.  Is this a Circulating Book or an E-Book? This book is circulating
    5. Location and Call Number for the Book:  RC569.5.V53 R63 2010
    6.  What clues in the book record lead you to believe that this book is credible, or trustworthy?  (Remember the ASAP criteria from IRIS): I think this could be a credible since this book includes bibliographical references, and is dated 2010. I couldn't access the references.
    The Summit Catalog

    1. Search Term(s) used: Internet/ Behavior, Addictive -- psychology.
    2. Citation information for one book: (author, title, city of publication, publisher, publication date):   Neils Clark; P Shavaun Scott, Game addiction : the experience and the effects, Jefferson, N.C,  McFarland & Co. 2009
    3.  Subject Headings (the field is called “Related Subjects” in Summit)
    4.  Location and Call Number for the Book: OCLC Number  277136395/ISBN  9780786443642 0786443642/ Call Number  616.85 C53g 2009
    5. What clues in the book record lead you to believe that this book is credible, or trustworthy? Recent date of publication, also both have had links to their names, they might not have a lot of work in publication but from what I read it seems that they use factual information on the study (documentation on game addiction)
    6.  How did this search differ from the search in the Cannell Library Book Catalog? I feel the only difference was the layout I prefer the Cannell over the Summit it just seemed easier to use. Another thing I noticed was it would just be more convenient to get a book from Cannell
    7. Format was book and E-book.
Books 24x7 – IT Pro Collection of E-books

IT Pro Collection seems pretty basic to use, I like how you can pick the date, title, content, and also use additional fields. I think the set up can be used by any person that gets frustrated with looking for research and has difficulties using technology. But one thing I did notice was that when I was looking things up a lot of times it came back with no search results, so I had to modify my topic change description a little.

    Google Books (books.google.com)

    1. Search Term(s) used: Internet/Internet addiction
    2. Citation information for the book: (author, title, city of publication, publisher, publication date): Mary Manjikian,Threat Talk: The Comparative Politics of Internet Addiction, Farnham Surrey England/Burlington, VT, Ashgate Publishing, 2012
    3. What clues does Google Books provide that lead you to believe this book is trustworthy?  I feel it is since it lets me actually look at the book, and I see that she has cited over sources, and it was a case study. Unfortunately I found no reviews on this book.

    Summarize this unit

By doing these searches I have found that they all can be useful in their own way. I have actually used google books before while doing research and have found some credible resources, plus it is pretty easy to use. I like how it gives you options before you actually finish typing that helps in many cases when I have trouble coming up with something. IT Pro also seemed to be  realistically easy to maneuver through. But I came to a conclusion that all would be helpful, it's nice to have multiple tools to make your research go smoothly.

Research Journal, Part 4: Types of Information

Practice Questions(Provide answers/sources for each of these)

    1) Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?
I would use the Web sites for a overview, then use a Academic Journal to get more in-dept, and the database on health, and even a book on healthy eating

    2) Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have
their Cd's sold in Target stores. Is this censorship?
For this one I would use Web Sites to get started, then Popular Magazines, and even use people for expert opinions, and views on the topic.

    3) How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over
someone with a high school diploma?
With this one I would start with Popular Magazines since I think this answer to this question can change over time, I would also use Web Sites, and maybe the Academic Journals for more professional research and statistics.

    4) Should educators use commercial services to combat
    plagiarism?
This question to me would be more leaning towards Academic Journals, for more written info by scholars.

    5) Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting global
    warming?
I would use the Academic Encyclopedia, probably lean towards a Science Encyclopedia, then from there check out a book. There is also the chance I can find something about this topic in a Popular Magazine such as a Science Magazine.

Identify the most useful information sources for your
three research questions that you composed in Unit 3

How will our youth today be effective by Internet addiction?
    Academic Journals and Popular Magazines

How effective is treatment, and what is the best solutions?
         Academic Journals

How is stress and depression associated with Internet addiction?
         Academic Encyclopedia subject Psychology
