This seems to follow all ASPECT, being very credible information. This is a E-book and a full text is available on the web for viewing. This E-book offers a full descriptions of authors including email address, and it also provided a in depth review of the book. There is also cited information, and references. This book "focuses on the psychological effects of today's online media". This seems to be right on with my topic, they also focuses on other topics involving youth and the Internet that could be tied in with with my topic. The Springer site seems to also offer a lot of info on other subjects online which you are able to access Abstract, Full Text, or PDF.

Summary:
This site seems to be credible, due to the fact it gives information on both authors and it is linked to SHEU that states it is nationally-recognised, since 1977. This site is part of the education and health journal. The references used for this article a within the last two years, and feel could be work able with my topic. Both authors are possibly well knowledgeable within the subject with one being a doctoral researcher in the field of online addictions and the other a professor of gambling studies. Since this site is located on a edu web page I see a credibility link there.

Summary:
This site seems credible enough, the article is only a year old with a lot of info, and references. One thing about this article it might be a little harder to read since there are a lot of scientific data that is being explained. As like above authors are documented and emails are provided. This site the article is on is a peer-reviewed, open access journal.
Summary of Journal 9:
When searching for my topic on these four domains I found that at least the .com, edu, and .gov had some of the same articles. One thing that I noticed on the .com and .org was that there was a lot of advertising for rehabs. When I clicked on a site that looked like it would of been a very credible article just by the heading what I initially found was that the site was misleading to a smaller less credible site with a more of a help line or brief descriptions of my topic. The .com domain and the .org seemed to be the hardest to find credible sites and were the two that I spent most of my time browsing through especially .com. When I started my search with .gov, and .edu I found that I had more options for credible sources, and less misleading sites. I feel that .edu and .gov would be the best domains for my topic.

Research Journal, Part 8: Types of Information: Focus on Search Engines and Web Sites
Search Tools:
Exalead
This search engine offers a advance search option where you can exclude terms, do a proximity search, exact words, and exact phrases. One thing I liked about this search engine was that it was pretty simple to use, and also it lets you add on for example:+Internet +Addiction (Youth) OPT adults. There is also the option of where you want to find it; like site search, title search, URL search, and Link search, and gives you the option of time period.
Metasearch Tools:

With this search engine it didn't seem like they offered that much of options, it had a advance search option that only offered:
Web Search Results for "Internet "Internet addiction" youth…"
This engine did find sources for what I was looking for, but the search could of been narrowed better.
I really don't think I would use this search engine in the future even though it is very simple to use I would rather have more options.
Subject Directories:

After looking through the subject directories I found that Infomine looked the most promising, to me it seemed similar to Boolean. Infomine offered Advance search such as search in these fields, search in these subject categories, limit search to, display options, and browse options for all subject categories. Infomine also provided search tips which can be very helpful to breaking down the topic your searching for by giving examples on how to do this. There is also a browse resource type that can be useful. The only downfall was it was a little confusing to me, maybe because it does gives you a lot of options which that is good but can be a little overwhelming at times. There is a possibility I might use this site in the future, I've bookmarked it for future reference, and so I can play around with it more to get more acquainted with.

How will our youth today be effective by Internet addiction? Revision to Youth and effect* and Internet and (addiction), Addiction* and youth and (Internet)
MINDING THE NET
Your suggestion: Revised
(youth OR adolescents OR teenagers) AND Internet AND addiction
Citation for Popular magazine
Goldman, Lea. "This Is Your Brain on Clicks"
Forbes
I chose this article because I was familiar with the popular magazines, and it focused on Internet addiction with youth and also what they are doing to solve this disorder. Another thing that I liked about this article is that it focuses on another country this makes this topic a more global problem. This article also gives percentages of addicted youth, which is possibly back by documented sources.
Citation for Scholarly Journal
Fioravanti, Giulia ,Dèttore, Davide, Casale, Silvia."Adolescent Internet Addiction: Testing the Association Between Self-Esteem, the Perception of Internet Attributes, and Preference for Online Social Interactions".CyberPsychology, Behavior & Social Networking; Jun2012, Vol. 15 Issue 6, p318-323, 6p. Academic Search Premier. Tues. 24 July 2012.
Give a brief discussion noting three things that identify this as a research article.
I used the the EBSCOhost for Academic search, this article was also labeled Academic Journal on the side, and had a in dept heading. I also marked the primary source option too. This article explains a case study on social behaviors and Internet addictions, and this possibly could be useful research for my topic.
Citation for an article from a newspaper
MICHAEL JANOFSKY. "Youth Pleads An Addiction To the Internet In Threat Case". New York Times. 13 January 2000.Academic Search Premier. Tues. 24 July. 2012.
This article from the New York Times, would be good for a research towards my topic because it takes a actual case of a youth that is blaming the Internet for a addiction he might have that has caused him to make threats via email chats. Even though this is a court proceeding, and the defendant is probably only looking to put blame other than himself, I still think this would be a good opinion start.
Summarizing this activity
During this assignment I kind of stumbled a few times, not sure if I was doing it right or not. I didn't really have to change my search statement to much but what I noticed that when I used your suggestion I came up with better articles, they seem to hit the main point, with a lot of different direction. My citations seem a little long especially for the Scholarly Journal.

Internet/Internet Addiction
Cannell Library Book Catalog
- Search Term(s) used: Internet/and Internet addiction
- Citation information for one book: (author, title, city of publication, publisher, publication date): Roberts, Kevin J. Cyber junkie : escape the gaming and Internet trap, Center City, Minn. Hazelden, 2010
- Subject Headings (taken from the Subject Field): Video game addiction, Internet addiction
- Is this a Circulating Book or an E-Book? This book is circulating
- Location and Call Number for the Book: RC569.5.V53 R63 2010
- What clues in the book record lead you to believe that this book is credible, or trustworthy? (Remember the ASAP criteria from IRIS): I think this could be a credible since this book includes bibliographical references, and is dated 2010. I couldn't access the references.
The Summit Catalog
- Search Term(s) used: Internet/ Behavior, Addictive -- psychology.
- Citation information for one book: (author, title, city of publication, publisher, publication date): Neils Clark; P Shavaun Scott, Game addiction : the experience and the effects, Jefferson, N.C, McFarland & Co. 2009
- Subject Headings (the field is called “Related Subjects” in Summit)
- Location and Call Number for the Book: OCLC Number 277136395/ISBN 9780786443642 0786443642/ Call Number 616.85 C53g 2009
- What clues in the book record lead you to believe that this book is credible, or trustworthy? Recent date of publication, also both have had links to their names, they might not have a lot of work in publication but from what I read it seems that they use factual information on the study (documentation on game addiction)
- How did this search differ from the search in the Cannell Library Book Catalog? I feel the only difference was the layout I prefer the Cannell over the Summit it just seemed easier to use. Another thing I noticed was it would just be more convenient to get a book from Cannell
- Format was book and E-book.
IT Pro Collection seems pretty basic to use, I like how you can pick the date, title, content, and also use additional fields. I think the set up can be used by any person that gets frustrated with looking for research and has difficulties using technology. But one thing I did notice was that when I was looking things up a lot of times it came back with no search results, so I had to modify my topic change description a little.
Google Books (books.google.com)
- Search Term(s) used: Internet/Internet addiction
- Citation information for the book: (author, title, city of publication, publisher, publication date): Mary Manjikian,Threat Talk: The Comparative Politics of Internet Addiction, Farnham Surrey England/Burlington, VT, Ashgate Publishing, 2012
- What clues does Google Books provide that lead you to believe this book is trustworthy? I feel it is since it lets me actually look at the book, and I see that she has cited over sources, and it was a case study. Unfortunately I found no reviews on this book.
Summarize this unit
By doing these searches I have found that they all can be useful in their own way. I have actually used google books before while doing research and have found some credible resources, plus it is pretty easy to use. I like how it gives you options before you actually finish typing that helps in many cases when I have trouble coming up with something. IT Pro also seemed to be realistically easy to maneuver through. But I came to a conclusion that all would be helpful, it's nice to have multiple tools to make your research go smoothly.

Research Journal, Part 4: Types of Information
Practice Questions(Provide answers/sources for each of these)
1) Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?
I would use the Web sites for a overview, then use a Academic Journal to get more in-dept, and the database on health, and even a book on healthy eating
2) Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have
their Cd's sold in Target stores. Is this censorship?
For this one I would use Web Sites to get started, then Popular Magazines, and even use people for expert opinions, and views on the topic.
3) How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over
someone with a high school diploma?
With this one I would start with Popular Magazines since I think this answer to this question can change over time, I would also use Web Sites, and maybe the Academic Journals for more professional research and statistics.
4) Should educators use commercial services to combat
plagiarism?
This question to me would be more leaning towards Academic Journals, for more written info by scholars.
5) Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting global
warming?
I would use the Academic Encyclopedia, probably lean towards a Science Encyclopedia, then from there check out a book. There is also the chance I can find something about this topic in a Popular Magazine such as a Science Magazine.
Identify the most useful information sources for your
three research questions that you composed in Unit 3
How will our youth today be effective by Internet addiction?
Academic Journals and Popular Magazines
How effective is treatment, and what is the best solutions?
Academic Journals
How is stress and depression associated with Internet addiction?

When I tried to search "citing Wikipedia" the only thing I got was Reliability of Wikipedia, I tried rewording it different and came up with nothing. So I went ahead, and did a google search, and this is what I found the format should look like;
Psychology. (n.d.).In Wikipedia.Retrieved October 14, 2009, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychology.
What I did learn is that it probably wouldn't be such a great idea to cite Wikipedia, which I already knew this. One thing I did notice with Wikipedia is that key words were highlighted making it easier to jump back and forth for information.

This activity taught me how to use GVRL which I didn't even know it existed. At first I seemed to have problems using it; but it could of just been because I wasn't familiar with GVRL, I soon figured it out, and had no problems. What I found out was that it had better credibility, and the info could be cited. I found that GVRL was a little easier to use too. Wikipedia is okay to brainstorm ideas for research, then take that information and match it up with a creditable source. I really like how the IRIS tutorials are really easy to comprehend I also like how it explains step be step in detail. In the past for research all I did was google it, I had the concept of creating questions about a topic, but it just took me longer and sometimes I couldn't find what I needed. For future research this is what I plan on doing first. There is a lot of information out there on the net it's just the means of getting a hold of it through the right questions.

Research Journal, Part 2: Plagiarism
·
In this statement I believe there is no need to
cite, because it is stating their own experiences so it’s correct.
·
In this statement I feel it can go both ways
since it is common knowledge and it has been paraphrased. I personally would
cite it anyways by stating where it is from, for example it would look
something like this; The Constitution explains that Americans want to create a more perfect
union; they also want to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility,
provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the
blessings of liberty for everybody( ). I
prefer to use the MLA format, with a works cited page.
·
In statement number 3 it gives a percentage of
high school students so this info must of came from some credible source, which
if I was reading this statement I would like to know how that person came up
that amount of high school students. So with this I would cite the credible
source of where I found the 57% from then state my opinion after.
·
This I feel is correct since it’s a summary.
·
With this one I feel it is correct, the writer
used quotation marks when making a direct quote of Martin Luther King’s letter,
and then gave a citation at the end of the sentence.
·
This one I believe is partial right and partially
wrong the writer uses the quotation rights, but it’s not the exact wording. I
had to go over this one a few times.
·
This is correct because it’s only a statement of
what a friend said.
·
I would have to say this is correct because it is common
knowledge, but in my opinion I would site it anyways just to play it safe.
Summary and Steps of Avoiding Plagiarism
Summary and Steps of Avoiding Plagiarism
This week I learned a lot about plagiarism, and did some extra research on the subject. I found out that there are so many different copyright laws, especially in the music industry. I also found that the IRIS site was really helpful with identifying when or when not to acknowledge. The steps I plan on using to avoid plagiarism is to make sure I give credit to the source, and make sure to site everything I have borrowed. I think it's better to play it safe, if I'm not sure of something I'll probably go ahead and site it anyways.
I do have a question, in my first post I used someone else's picture but I made sure that I included his name at the bottom of the picture, but this is all I did, so is that giving enough acknowledgement?
